Page layout options
The page layout dialog allows you to control the most important options when printing. Some short-cut buttons are also
included inthe ribbon. You can access the page layout dialog either from the ribbon->Document->Page layout button,
or from a button on the top toolbar of the palettes
Important: You can decide if you want print only the currently active section or all the sections in the document.
If you select to print only the current option, only the section will be printed, i.e. without a titlepage, table of contents,
facsimiles, etc. Pagination will start with page 1, regarless of the position of the section in the document. You can easily switch
from one mode to the other with the checkbox on the Ribbon->Document->Print all sections menu.
The page layout dialog is divided into two columns. Each column is further divided into categories.
- Right column
- Paper sizes and margins
- You can set the top, right, left and bottom margins of the page in millimeters
- The
Set page sizes ad orientation button opens the printer's settings dialog.
- Options
- Print all sections
- New page on new section: inserts a page break in-between sections. Unless this option is checked,
you cannot alter the default number of staves per pages on a per section basis.
- Print facsimiles: check that option if you want section facsimiles to be printed in the body of the documents.
- Do not print titles. Skip all section titles.
- Center lyrics: if this option is checked lyrics will be centered on their anchor position. If not, they will be left aligned.
- Alternate margins: switch left-right margin values on odd/even pages. Convenient for binding.
- Proportional spacing: allow proportional spacing of chords. You can then switch between proportional mode and
fixed spacing mode from the
Ribbon->Editing->Proportional spacing. This is because fixed spacing mode is
more stable than proportional spacing for input. Unless
the Proportional spacing box is checked in Page layouts, you will not be able to switch to proportional mode from the ribbon.
If the Proportional spacing box is checked in Page layouts, printing will automatically use proprotional spacing regardless
of whether the editing mode is proprotional or not.
- If this option is checked extra spacing at the bottom of the page will be evenly divided between the systems.
- Bracket systems: show a bracket on the left of each system in multiple instruments scores.
Section comments
- Print section comments: allow section notes to be printed or leave them out. Section notes are added from the
Ribbon->Sections->Section notes button. They are in RTF format.
- Print section notes at the end of the document. If checked, the notes will be stacked together at the end of the document.
If not, section notes will be printed on a separate page immediately after the section.
Left column
- Sections layout and options:
- Systems per page: default number of systems per page. Thsi can be overridden on a section to section basis IF the
New section on a new page box is checked.
- Blanks between sections: in continuous print mode (i.e. if New section on a new page box is not checked),
this sets the number of system vertical spacings to include between two sections.
- Horizontal cursor: default horizontal step value between chords. This value may decrease if you add more chords
to a system. It also determines the average spacing of chords when using the
Reformat page tool.
Tablature mode allows fro a narrower spacing than notation generally speaking.
- Tablature line thickness: Increase or decrease the default thickness of tablature lines. This has no effect on notation
- Staff line color and bar line color. Sets the color of systems and bar lines. Default is black.
- Braille paper settings: Sets the number of lines and columns when using the Export to Braille option.
Braille export uses a text, not graphical, format.
You can also set the orientation: portrait or landscape.
- Page numbering:
- Text: the text to display together with the page numbers. You can use the '%' sign to position the page number
elsewhere than at the end of the text: - page % of Beethoven's fifth - for instance.
- Alignment: where to print page numers, top bottom, alternate
- Document page offset: if you want to start pagination with something else than 1
- Do not print page numbers
- Skip first page number
- Bar line numbering options:
- Print every 5th bar number: if checked, numbers are added every 5th bar. If not checked, bar numbers are added at the beginning of each system.
- Bar number height: controls how high above the systems bar numbers are printed.
- Outline numbers: darws a square box around bar numbers
- Justification: percentage of width of the system for which the last bar will be offset to the right.
Printer settings
- Page format: This is accessed via the regular Windows printer settings dialog. Fandango uses your installed printers definitions for all displays,
including on screen. You can use for instance the A4 page format or the legal page format if you want a taller page. Important:
since Fandango relies on installed printers, documents may not look exactly the same from one computer to the other. This may
be the case for instance between a European printer definition that uses a different page size than an American one.
- Page orientation: you can opt between portrait and landscape. On screen display will reflect the
chosen orientation.
Print preview
Print preview is accessible via the Ribbon->Document->Print preview button. You can also add a small icon shortcut with
the customize ribbon tool. Print preview will automatically start at the beginning of the currently selected section. If you navigate
to a different section within Print preview, the last section displayed will become the active section.
Preliminaries
Preliminaries are optional pages that are displayed at the beginning of the document: title page, table of contents, preface,
document facsimiles. Those options are available from the Title page settings dialog. See the
Title page section in the Documents help file.
Printing to PDF
Creating a PDF file from Fandango is completely similar to regular printing, but you must install a pseudo-printer capable of
creating PDF files. Once that pseudo-printer is installed, you simply select it from the list of available printers on your machine
and simply click on Print. There are many pseudo-printers available on the Internet, many of them free. I personally use
Primo-PDF but whatever your favorite PDF printer is will do the job.
Since printer installation affect the way Fandango docucments are displayed it is recommended you provide a PDF copy of the
documents you want to share. The file associations settings allow you to assign a value to the PDF copy that is associated with the
document. A link to that PDF file will be generated if you create a WEB page from Fandango, so it is easy to distribute your documents on the WEB
without having to worry about links file names, etc.
