The Siena lute manuscript, preserved at The Hague, Gemeentemuseum (MS 28.B.39) is a vast anthology of 160 pieces of Italian lute music, probably compiled in the 1590s, yet consisting mostly of pieces from the mid-16th century. Written using exclusively Italian tablature, it is methodically organized, with fantasias and ricercares opening the collection followed by Canzoni Francesi (French chansons).
Very notably for the period, very few dances are represented in the collection, with the exception of 2 galliards and one allemande or ballo - seems to have served as a model for John Dowland's "Lady Hunsdon's Puffe" - at the very end of the volume, quite probably from the later part of the century. Those dances are of excellent quality.

The final leaves are interesting as they contain later compositions, such as toccatas, and a dozen exercises without barlines, more typical of the late 16th or even early 17th century.

Most of the value of the collection, however, is in the fantasias and ricercare, many of whom are titled after their composer's name, often times abbreviated, and organized by tonality. Among the composers, we find many famous names of the period, notably Francesco da Milano, Giulio Severino, Fabrizio Dentice, or Luigi Vindella. Perhaps a dozen pieces were copied "Dal libro di F.B.", from the book of F.B. "F.B." as his contemporary "B.M.", also found in Vincenzo galiei's Fronimo, are still unidentified, but must have enjoyed some degree of fame, to be recognizable simply by their initials.

I am proposing this transcription in grand staff notation for two main reasons: first, I think it helps highlight the complexity of that music for people not familiar with tablature notation. This is particularly evident with the opening motifs of the fantasias, that are often echoed between voices. Finding exactly where those voices are has been a constant challenge, I am afraid still not fully solidified, either by my own inability or by the nature of the instrument and its notation. I found myself disagreeing with myself repeatedly on the matter of attributing a particular note to one staff or the other. What seeemed obvious one minute became debatable on second and third reading...

A second motivation for this transcription is to help with the development of my software, Fandango. I would never have started this project without the automatic procedures offered by Fandango in the conversion of tablature to notation. And yet, those automatic procedures are far from satisfactory for a final product. In the end, I had to edit the notation piece by piece, several times, and as I mentioned earlier, all the while hesitating on the best way to convey the fullness of the tablature version.

Although this transcription is by no means a satisfactory transcription for keyboard, I hope it will be useful for other uses, and for people who do not read tablature. Also, it may be interesting to use in the creation of duets for lute or guitar.

One final note, that may seem trivial to most of you, this grand staff transcription allows for a much more interesting MIDI rendition of the pieces. One may scoff at it but MIDI output is an essential tool for editing and proofreading, not to mention being very useful for people with visual impairments. Note that the tempi I used are mostly too fast for actual performance.

May this work receive its reward in your enjoyment of it.

Alain Veylit, Riverside California, February 2026.
