This is a fabulous collection of delightful pieces ranging in difficulty from easy to advanced and it was indeed intended as a tutoring book as its title promises. The duets are particularly rewarding and may have been intended for the teacher and pupil to play together. Unpretentious in character, the pieces seem to have selected to be fun to play with many arrangements of popular tunes and dances, and a definite progression in difficulty as the pupil progresses in the book. From that respect, it is at the complete opposite of Robert Dowland's Varietie of Lute Lessons, organised by genre of pieces - fantasies, pavans, galliards, etc. - and requiring a high level of virtuosity from the first piece onwards.

Left hand fingerings are given for a few pieces and are notated below the tablature staff. Given the fact that this is a printed book, the facsimile is very legible and many copies can be found on the WEB. I added links to facsimile copies for each piece. You can find those by clicking on the pieces' titles in the HTML detail section of the collection. Guitar players can easily play off the tablature simply by dropping the G string to F# although several pieces require a seventh course.
